What Is The ANZAC Legend
The ANZAC legend is all about the Australian soldiers being the best out of all the other countries. They were supposed to have qualities that only they possessed such as mateship, loyalty, humour, courage and endurance which made them the best on the battle field. The ANZAC legend is part of the Australian identity, what makes us proud to be Australian citizens and shapes todays Australian values and morals.
An example of the ANZAC legend is Simpson and his donkey. Simpson was a stocking merchant on ships but when the call came to fight he immediately signed up. He was a stretcher bearer with the ANZACS at Gallipoli. Simpson obtained a donkey and for 3 and a half weeks he carried down wounded soldiers to safety and care. He was eventually shot and killed but his donkey still managed to carry to wounded soldier they had been rescuing to safety. This story is a prime example of the ANZAC legend as it is all about an Australian soldier who had the bravery to save lives even when his was endangered.
